The final Space Opening Fiesta

We all have bucket lists and one of mine is to experience the legendary Space opening fiesta. Last year i booked a week in Ibiza for this May with a risk of not knowing the date for the Space opening. Lucky for me the date landed in the booked week. What was leaked in the clubbing press at the start of the year, was that Space will close at the end of this season after 27 years, which has been run by Pepe Rosello since 1989. His club lease runs out this year and he plans to retire. A man who has shaped Space to the legendary status and the world wide name, it has become today.

I enter the mighty space ( car park ) area around 9 pm and Dennis Ferrer is on the decks. The New Yorker is in full swing and the rammed party is well under way. He drops his mix of  Sabb - One of us

I witness the parade which moves throughout the outdoor dance floor, a mixture of  female dancers in various flamboyant attire, they provide stylistic entertainment.

Booka Shade follow with their live electronic set. I've seen the German duo a few times before so head out for a wander inside to the other areas of Space. Polish D.J Remo is providing jackin house in the chilled out room of El Salon

Meanwhile in the Sunset Terrace it's going off with ( Elevate Head Honcho's ) Pig & Dan.The Spanish duo provide a quality tech - house / techno set. Would love to stay but i need a lift of Colombian, not a coffee but one legendary D.J from South America Erick Morillo.

I'm back in the open air stage where i move to the front. I hear ' Erick Morillo's in the house' followed by the Chuck Roberts speech ' My House'. Quickly we're in the groove, a plane passes over our heads while the ice cannon gives us a blast. Uplifting, Euphoric? I'm experiencing it all. This is the party I've been waiting for. The aptly titled Sunday Shoutin ( Erick's Subliminal mix ) flows out in to the Playa d'en bossa night air.  It's dark now and we get to fully appreciate the stunning visuals. Morillo drops the dirty house of Claude VonStroke - Barrump We all nod along in approval.

In the Main room ( Discoteca ) Roger Sanchez has the dance floor in his hands. A man who's no stranger to this club, with having played many a season here. He is working the crowd with his uplifting house set. A quick ( beer o' clock ) pit stop at El Salon and I'm trying to get in to the packed room of the terrace. Why is it busy, i hear you ask? Because one of Space's favorite D.J's Sasha is in the mix. He doesn't let us down with his hypnotic and atmospheric set of quality electronica. I swear i even saw the great man pull a couple of shapes behind the decks.



27 has been a unlucky number for many legends; we have lost Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison all at this tender age. This season we will lose this iconic name at that very age. So pleased i was there to experience the 27th opening fiesta and a little bit sad the next time i make it back to Ibiza i won't see the great word again.
