A year ago i was asked by blogger @fruitbatwalton if i would guest review for him after seeing my music ramblings on twitter, of course i jumped at the chance of getting a review out to the world. Lucky for me my first was the excellent Liverpool Band: Bird
Live Review: Bird- Electric Circus - Edinburgh
I awoke the morning of the gig to the sound of bird's singing in the start of a new day, from the trees nearby.
I have seen a lot of hype & excitement surrounding these ladies; Lead Singer/bassist: Adele Emmas and lead guitarist/vocalist: Sian Williams. The stage setup, looking, how I would imagine a Grimms fairy tale living room, with old lamps, empty bird cages , fairy lights with backdrop visuals of the two witches themselves ( the cover of the excellent new EP Ophelia ).
Tonight they chose to be black witches, with a ghoulish looking drummer, who throughout the entire set, remained hunched & head-bowed, almost prisoner like, maybe caught in a curse? All adding to the eerie presence. As we move through 45 mins of live music, all under the enchanting spell of bird, we experience mysterious choir like vocals ( sometimes I hear Bat 4 Lashes, Warpaint, Smoke Fairies ) tribal drums, ethereal guitar ( like early Cure - Pornography era & The xx ) cinematic build up's into crashing guitar crescendo's. Moving effortlessly through material new & old, finishing with a cover of : Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead with Adele's bass, thrashing away like the long lost daughter of Geezer Butler. A cover version they make their own.
If only the birds in the morning sounded this sweet?

Through out the year i have watched Bird gradually find their wings, enjoying both E.P's Bird and Ophelia until announcing recently that they have finished their long awaited debut album, titled My Fear And Me , penciled in for a May release. The first single to be ripped from it is the hauntingly, atmospheric and uplifting epic The Rain Song
Not just a stunning piece of sound but a mesmerizing video, a style not unlike legendary photography and director Anton Corbijn, with it's dark overtones, black and white visual's.
(You can order new single from their Facebook page )
A band who have gained attention from commercial radio, Amazing, Radio 2 and finally BBC6 Music, so much so both Lauren Laverne and Steve lamacq have given them a spin . A late added edition to the first 6 Music festival in Manchester but first to be on live, opening the festival on Friday night's quality line up of bands and d.j's. Lucky for me i will be there to witness it and plan to make it to the front for some Gothic - Folk Rock from Bird.
Get down early people, see you at the main stage
